In Brief
This walk is fairly energetic, starting with a climb for the first couple of miles. The route, however, is well defined. It is a well walked route over drove roads used in the past by armies, cattlemen and even the odd highwayman. Full of historic interest.
Walk Start Point
You can start from at least three places; Yarrow village (GR NT414300), Yair (GR NT459325) or from Selkirk, as described below.
From Selkirk (which is situated between Galashiels and Hawick on the A7) you need to make your way onto the A708 and head for Philiphaugh Farm which is situated on the outskirts of the town, near the Selkirk rugby ground. There is a small parking area (GR NT454289), near the farm junction.
Walk Description
The start of the walk takes you along a well used forestry track and slowly winds its way up the Three Brethren (GR 433319 see photos), where you will join up with the Southern Upland Way, which is well marked along the route.
From the Three Brethern you have good views of Eildon Hills. The three cairns symbolise the meeting of three old estates, one for each boundary. Once at the Three Brethern the going is good along the old drove road, with only one relatively unarduous climb.
On route you will pass the Wallace Trench (GR NT388327) which is named after Sir William Wallace, but it may actually be part of a pictish defense earthwork. This trench, just after your second climb and after you have crossed a stile is a good place for a breather. You can also survey the next part of the route from here which takes you to the Cheese Well just below Minchmoor itself.
The Cheese Well's name originates from past travellers leaving cheese and other foods to placate local fairies and goblins. From here it's all downhill to Traquair where you can visit Traquair House (GR NT331355) or carry on along the B709 to Innerleithen (photo) where you can finish up at the Traquair Arms (GR 330365).
Transport Arrangements
As this is not a circuit you will need to give transport some consideration. Possible alternatives are as follows:
- Leave your car at Innerleithen and take the bus to Galashiels and then on to Selkirk. Call 01835 825200 (Mon-Fri 0800-2000) fo bus times.
- Leave a car at both ends, this involves a bit of driving but saves waiting on public transport.
(If you are on a Border Walking Guided Walk, transport will be arranged for you)
