Walk details

In Brief

This is a long and fairly energetic walk, with many ascents and descents, although there are a few drop off points along the way if you'd prefer to do a shorter route.

The route is well defined to start with, as it follows the Old Drove Road (parts of which are boggy under foot so walking boots are recommended).

A map and compass skills are also essential as the top points are very exposed.

Walk Start Point

This walk starts at Kingsmeadows Car Park

Peebles is situated 20 miles south of Edinburgh on the A703, or west of Galashiels on the A72.   If travelling from the M6, turn off for Moffat and proceed to Peebles on the A701 to Broughton, then follow the B712 to Peebles.

Walk Description

Starting at the Kingsmuir Hotel, Peebles (GR: NT255 396), walk up Glen Road into Gypsie Glen, cross the stream by the bridge and head up the path for 3km passing through two gates.  Keep to the path till you reach the third gate (GR: NT274372), (1 hr).  From here, follow the path along the wall until you reach Kirkhope Law (GR: NT279353) (45 mins)  From here you get great views of Peebles and Lee Pen.  From Kirkhope Law head towards Birkscairn Hill (GR: NT274332) (44 mins).  So far the path has been good under foot, but this will change on the next leg, where you cross peat bogs, so the going can become slightly slower.  Proceed from Birkscairn towards Steak Law (GR: NT263321) (677 metres - 28 mins).  Then on to Dun Rig (GR: NT254316 ) (942 metres - 22 mins).  Navigation on the next leg is important.  Walk 1km to Spot Height (GR: NT247309) then head for Middle Hill, a drop to Glenrath Heights and then a short but steep climb up to Middle Hill (GR: NT241322) (732 metres) and then Broom Hill (GR: NT241329).  From Broom Hill, it's another short descent, then climb up to Stob Law (NT: 230333) (23 mins).  Ccarry on to Glenrath Hill (GR:NT724336) and Canada Hill (GR:NT226352).  The path of Canada Hill is steep but good.  Follow this through the farm (making sure you close all gates behind you until you reach the road), then turn right along the road until you reach the path at the side of a small wood.  Follow the path which will take you over Cadmuir Hill on a well worn path.  Head down to the gate at the wall of Tantala House, follow the wall to the next gate, then down the road till you reach Craigerne Lane. Proceed along Craigerne Lane till the junction at the High School, turn left down Bonnington Road for 100 metres, and finally finish at the rear of Kingsmuir Hotel.
